1901 ENGLAND & WALES CENSUS

Caryl and I have spent some considerable time extracting the information from the 1901 England and Wales Census. The Public Record Office have produced an online index. From the index it is possible to view and print the images of census pages. However this can be an expensive method. By using various techniques, including a utility from Leeds Index Searchers, we then extracted as much information as possible from the online index. Then came the hard slog of extracting the information from the microfiche held at the PRO in Kew. There are many errors in the index including entries that do not match e.g. an entry for Baffin should have read Baffo. We also stumbled across some that we didn't get from the index. Unfortunately, there are no matches for some people that we know we living - but we will hunt these down over time.

Update 19 Jan 2005 - After many months and considerable expense I extracted the references under BANGHAM and BANGHAN. There were many transcription errors - some should have been BAUGHAN etc. There were some real money wasters (the site data has been encrypted and the previous utility no longer works). I've also updated the distribution maps.

I've produced a report on the matched Baughans etc. which includes the corrections we picked up as at this date. This is in Adobe Acrobat format and is about 306 A4 pages (landscape). The size of the file is about 400Kb. As more information is found this file will be updated.
